PGA of SA honours Schwartzel

Charl Schwartzel can now add Honorary Member of the PGA of South Africa (PGA of SA) to his growing list of achievements.

At the Joburg Open this weekend, Paul Marks, Chairman of the PGA of SA, presented Schwartzel with a certificate and Honorary Member player’s badge in recognition of his Masters triumph in 2011.

The PGA of SA honours those professional golfers who have achieved extraordinary heights in golf, such as winning a Major or a World Cup of Golf.

“We’re very proud of what Charl has achieved as a professional, but more importantly with the way he conducts himself on the international stage. He represents everything of the professionalism and excellence the PGA of SA strives to achieve in South African golf,” said Marks.

“We are blessed with a wealth of golf talent coming through at the moment and our golf is in a very healthy space. At the PGA of SA we have a strong and supportive board ready to take us into a new future, and golfers such as Charl are our ambassadors in this regard.”

Schwartzel, a winner of 10 tournaments worldwide including the 2011 Masters, said he was humbled by the recognition he received from the PGA of SA.

“It’s an incredible honour for me. As touring professionals, we are out there doing our best to represent our country and win tournaments. But the club professionals in South Africa do an equally important job in keeping the game healthy and growing for our next generation of golfers to do us proud.”

Schwartzel joins an illustrious list of South African golfers who have already received Honorary Membership of the PGA of SA, including Grand Slam champion and nine-time Major winner Gary Player, four-time Major champion and former world No 1 Ernie Els, Major champions Retief Goosen, Trevor Immelman and Louis Oosthuizen, and World Cup of Golf winners Wayne Westner and Rory Sabbatini (2003).
