McGuigan outlasts Hugo in shootout

Doug McGuigan won his fifth Sunshine Tour title on Sunday when he outlasted Jean Hugo in a five-hole playoff in the R1.2-million Zambia Open.

The pair finished level on 16-under-par 272 after the 762 holes of regulation play, and then McGuigan held his nerve through the five playoff holes to deny Hugo what would have been his fourth title of a golden season.

McGuigan started the final round with a two-stroke edge over Hugo, but Hugo shut down the gap with his final round score of five-under-par 67.

The eventual winner turned in two-under 34, and then made a succession of seven pars before picking up his next shot as Hugo chipped away at the lead.

As Hugo birdied the 13th, he was one behind McGuigan, and, as the champion dropped a shot on 15, Hugo birdied 17 to draw ahead.

But McGuigan got the dropped whot back with a birdie of his own on 18, and the sudden-death playoff ensued.

Switzerland’s Robert Wiederkehr was in third on 12-under, with Bradford Vaughn in fourth at 11-under.

The leading Sunshine Tour rookie Allan Versfeld extended his lead in the Rookie of the Year race with his fifth-place finish at nine-under.
