Montgomerie withdraws injured from Italian Open

Colin Montgomerie limped out of the Italian Open after just nine holes on Thursday after failing to recover from a calf injury.

Montgomerie tore his left calf muscle on the last day of the European Masters in Switzerland earlier this month and missed last week's KLM Open in the Netherlands.

Speaking after leaving the Turin course, Europe's victorious 2010 Ryder Cup captain said "I just tried to play too soon and I just couldn't swing the club. I'm in a lot of pain. I tried, but now what it needs is rest."

Montgomerie had previously been advised he would need eight weeks off for the injury to fully heal, but still came to Turin anyway.

He said "the competitive side of me just wanted to play this week so much."
