American Fred Couples was on Monday confirmed for next month's Australian Open, which has been overshadowed by Greg Norman's pull-out and Tiger Woods's dazzling appearance at the rival Masters.

The former world number one and US Masters champion will join compatriot John Daly and Australians Geoff Ogilvy and Adam Scott for the December 3-6 event at New South Wales Golf Club.

"I am very much looking forward to playing in the Australian Open and in particular the New South Wales Golf Club which is known as one of the most beautiful links courses in the world," Couples said.

"I haven't been to Sydney for some time and look forward to visiting this magnificent city once again."

Couples, 50, has a hard act to follow in 14-time major winner Woods, who flew in on a private jet and masterfully clinched a two-shot win in front of massive galleries.

Couples, a five-time Ryder Cup player, has clocked up 46 career victories and captained the United States to victory at last month's Presidents Cup -- where Woods clinched the winning point.

Five-time champion and fans' favourite Greg Norman announced his withdrawal from the Australian Open last week as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
