Former US Masters Champion Trevor Immelman is demonstrating a return to form, as he and young star James Kamte head the South African challenge after the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship ar St Andrews.
They are hot on the heels of joint leaders Northern Ireland duo
Rory McIlroy and Michael Hoey and Scotland's Richie Ramsay.
Immelman, whose season has been hampered by a wrist injury,
scored an impressive five-under-par 67 on the Old Course on Friday.
"It's interesting because I felt like I was hitting the ball
much better yesterday, although at Carnoustie there is less margin
for error," Immelman said.
"I'm thrilled with my round, I felt I played solidly throughout,
but I am particularly pleased with a score of 32 on the back nine.
I've not played much recently so it's great to build up my
confidence.
"I really enjoy playing this format, Tico (Torres) has been my
playing partner a number of times and we are great friends. We live
close in the US, so we regularly see each other at home."
"When you are playing at the home of golf with such a great
player as Trevor you can't beat that," said Bon Jovi drummer
Torres.
"We've been friends for a while, we met through the Dunhill and
we're also friends back home. I gave him a set of drums which he
plays. He gives me tips on golf and I give him tips on drumming."
Hennie Otto and Keith Horne were two shots behind Immelman and
Kamte.
"I am playing okay, you know, but you really have to make a lot
of birdies in this event and in this format to have a chance in
both the pro and team competitions," said Otto.
"It's been great to come back here though - I just wish I was
scoring better because I would love to have a chance to win this
tournament one day."
Meanwhile, 2002 Open Champion and twice winner of the US Open,
Ernie Els, will have been disappointed with his level par 72 at St
Andrews, which leaves him 11 shots behind the leaders.
