SA sports stars support Player charity drive

South Africa’s sports stars have rallied behind Gary Player in their support of this week’s Gary Player Invitational, presented by Coca-Cola, at Zimbali Country Club.

Sharks rugby players Meyer Bosman and Charl McLeod, Olympic swimmer Cameron van der Burgh, and South African cricket legend Shaun Pollock will be teeing it up in the official Pro-Am and the tournament respectively in the bid to raise funds for charity.

When the phone call came through to play in Friday’s Pro-Am, Sharks and Springbok rugby player Meyer Bosman immediately shifted around his training schedule, and teammate Charl McLeod postponed a family get-together.

“I heard about the tournament last year, and to be honest I’ve been holding out for an invitation so I’m very glad I got the nod,” said Bosman. “I’ve never met Gary Player, but the legacy he’s left for South African golf has been incredible. He started the success we’re seeing in South African golf to this day, and I think SA golf owes him a great debt.”

Bosman plays off an eight handicap, but admits he will have a few first-tee jitters. “I just hope the occasion is not too big for me.”

McLeod is equally excited to be playing. “I feel honoured to have been invited. I’m hoping to meet Gary Player. He’s my first memory of a South African sports star who was also an international star.” McLeod was also only too happy to reschedule his family plans. “I moved a few things around, but I’m sure they’ll understand,” he said.

Pollock is back to play in the main tournament, having been part of the winning amateur team last year. “It’s great to help Mr Player raise the money for charity. As professional sportsmen we have a great platform to help give something back,” said Pollock.
