SA pair qualify for Argentine Amateur

South Africa’s Drikus Bruyns and CJ du Plessis will start their match play campaign at the 117th Argentine Amateur Championship today after successfully completing the qualifier on Wednesday.

Bruyns from Boland opened with a 70 at the Pilar Golf Club near Buenos Aires and carded a three over 75 to tie for 17th on one over 145 in the 36-hole qualifier.

Limpopo’s Du Plessis improved by two shots on his opening 74 to tie for 22nd, one shot behind his compatriot.

Canadian Garret won the qualifier on six under 138 after two successive rounds of 69.

Only the leading sixty four players from the qualifier advanced to the match play stage to contest the title.

Bruyns, who ranks fourth on the current South African Golf Association’s national rankings, will face off against Teemu Tapani Toivonen from Finland in today’s first round of the match play section, while Du Plessis will square off against Italy’s Giorgio de Filippi.
