Katsande gives back to society

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande used the Christmas break to give back to the community where he comes from in Harare.

The Zimbabwe international organised a football competition, the Under-19 Willard Katsande Tournament, in Mutare to give aspiring footballers a chance to showcase their talent.

Katsande was pleased with the outcome of the event and told Supersport.com that he is happy to do something for his home town.

He feels it is crucial that young talent gets an opportunity to develop their game, and expressed hope some of the participating players can one day emulate follow him into the professional ranks.

“I am happy that I can contribute to the game in my area,” said Katsande, who is known for his industrious and uncompromising displays in the engine room.

“I grew up here and I know how important it is to be playing at a young age. I hope this tournament will continue for a long time and help young players realise their dreams of playing professional football,” concluded the former Ajax Cape Town enforcer.

The tournament was won by Deportivo FC who destroyed Barons 6-0 in the final.

Katsande was afforded the time to organise the event, as the Premier Soccer League has entered a lengthy recess to accommodate the festive period and the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, taking place in South Africa from January 19 to February 10.
