We got what we deserved - Renard

Coach Herve Renard says the reigning champions got what they deserved when they were held to a 1-1 draw by a spirited Ethiopian side in a Group C match at Mbombela Stadium on Monday.

Renard told fazfootball.com in a post-match interview that his team paid the price for failing to kill off the match but that the focus was now on the upcoming games against Nigeria and Burkina Faso.

Zambia took the lead at the stroke of half time through Collins Mbesuma and had the numerical advantage after Ethiopia had their goalkeeper Jemal Tassew sent off for dangerous play. Ethiopia equalised in the 65th minute through Adane Girma.

“This evening we got what we deserved. We were not able to finish off the match. Now our focus has to be the game against Nigeria on Friday. We will work in the coming days to improve on our game,” said Renard.

And Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Kalusha Bwalya said he was happy with the team’s performance and that a win for Zambia will eventually come.

“I thought I saw a good Zambia team. We had a lot of possession and control of the match. We had the better chances but we missed the finer-touch in front of goal,” Kalusha said.

“A win will come. Ethiopia kept coming at us, got one chance and levelled the score. We have accepted the result and should look forward to next match on Friday against Nigeria. It will be a classic.”

Zambia’s next match at 17h00 on Friday 25th January is against Nigeria who conceded a stoppage time equaliser against Burkina Faso, a result that left all four teams in Group C level on one point each from their opening matches.

Ethiopia will play Burkina Faso in a late kick-off on the same day. Both matches will be played at Mbombela Stadium.
