Bongani pleased with progress

Tottenham Hotspur defender Bongani Khumalo was delighted to get 90 minutes under his belt against Orlando Pirates on Tuesday.

The 1-1 draw in the Vodacom Challenge at Nelspruit marked the South African international’s first full match since fracturing his metatarsal while on loan at Preston in April.

“I was injured for almost three months, so it was great to get the full 90 minutes in at this point,” said Khumalo on the club's website. “It’s only the beginning of pre-season and I’ll only get stronger.”

It was a similar message from the defender in terms of the team’s progress as we complete a week’s preparation in South Africa.

“It was a good run out and playing at this altitude as well is great fitness for us,” he said.

“This was our second game in pre-season and we always look to win, unfortunately this time we could only manage a draw. There were positives and we’ll push on from here.

“We’ll work hard in training and be fit and sharp for Saturday.”

Tottenham will face Pirates again on Saturday at Ellis Park in the final of the Vodacom Challenge.

Meanwhile, Khumalo said a big ‘thanks’ to the fans in South Africa after receiving a hero’s welcome wherever he goes back home.

“I get a lot of love from the people of this wonderful country and I’m grateful for that,” he said. “We have a lot of supporters in the country and it’s great to be here with Spurs.”
