Red hot Eagles hammer Kira Young

Bell Supper League defending champions Express closed the gap on leaders Maroons in emphatic style, mauling bottom side Kira Young 6-2 at Shimoni on Friday.

An own goal from Abu Mubiru, brace from Michael Katende and three more strikes by Hussein Mubiru, Moses Ssekasana and Bright Haguma were more than enough to see the Red Eagles cut Maroons’ lead to just four points.

James Amol and Maurice Kaluminezi grabbed two consolation goals for the hosts, who remain at the log basement with just three points from 12 games.

Express, still in second position, are on 25 points but Maroons could restore the seven-mark lead if they beat Entebbe Young on Saturday.

Ironically, it is Kira that opened the floodgates when Amol shocked the visitors with a 35th minute goal.

But their work was made harder when Mubiru glanced into his own net five minutes later to level the scores.

However, Express were - with a minute to half time - reminded that this was not going to be an easy game for them, Kira restoring the lead through Kaluminezi to take a 2-1 lead into half time.

But seven minutes into the second half the Red Eagles drew level thanks to Hussein Mubiru’s fifth goal of the season.

Express were in ascendency at this time, Katende giving them the lead for the first time on 58 minutes before Ssekasana made it 4-2, 10 minutes later.

There was no coming back for the hosts, Haguma making it 5-2 with his fifth goal of the season and Katende cementing gloss on the performance by completing his brace on 76 minutes.
