Express roar to second place

Express started the New Year in style as they leapfrogged SC Villa to second place following their 2-0 over Water in a Bell Super League match played at Nakivubo on Saturday.

Arnold Ssebuye and Sulaiman Mayanja were on target for the reigning champions as they moved level with SC Villa on 18 points but with a better goal difference.

The two, however, trail leaders Maroons, who face Villa on Wednesday in their rescheduled game, by four points.

Defeat for Water sees Charles Ayiekoh’s side drop one to eighth on nine points. But it was hardly as smooth for Express as the scoreline may suggest.

The reigning league champions went ahead in the 29th minute when Ssebuye pounced but the visitors resiliently battled on with Brian Ochwo coming close.

But any hope of Water’s equalizer was crushed with a minute to go when Mayanja grabbed the second for the Red Eagles to ensure victory.
