Wasswa new Cranes skipper

Hassan Wasswa will captain Uganda Cranes in the upcoming Tusker Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup after Godfrey Walusimbi turned down the role.

The former Kayseri (Turkey) midfielder’s choice for a captain was a surprise especially that he was not in the earlier named 30-man squad by coach Bobby Williamson.

“He (Walusimbi) tells me he is not ready,” explained Bobby, adding “I think he is ready. But I can never force a player to take up responsibility if he thinks or feels otherwise.”

This will be the second time Wasswa, who is now a free agent his Turkish club having released him over three months ago, is captaining the Cranes.

The stout midfielder first skippered the national team in a friendly away to Botswana in the build-up to the first leg Nations Cup qualifier against Zambia.

His initial leadership test comes next Saturday when Uganda open their campaign in Cecafa against fierce regional rivals Kenya. The defending champions, Uganda, have won the competition a record 12 times.
