Cranes are June's best

The Cranes have been voted personalities for the month of June by the Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa) for their commanding dismissal of Congo Brazzaville.

Uganda thrashed the visitors 4-0 in Kampala to progress to the final round of the 2013 Nations Cup qualifiers with a 5-3 aggregate.

The national soccer side collected 545 points, outshining Lawn Tennis sensation, David Oringa, who managed 475, when sports scribes met at their monthly convention in Kampala.

Oringa won the Uganda Open after he beat Rwandan Matheius Uwizeyimana 7-5, 6-4 in the finals.

“On the basis of that emphatic performance against Congo Brazzaville, Uganda had to overturn a 3-1 and the team did it in style,” Uspa president Mark Namanya told the media.

The Cranes had earlier pulled off two draws against Angola and Senegal in Luanda and Kampala respectively to keep Uganda’s hopes of ever featuring at the 2014 World Cup alive.

Express finished third following their lifting of the Bell Uganda Super League title for the first time in 16 years.

Nemo Stars Volleyball Club and 3000m steeplechase runner Benjamin Kiplagat were also acknowledged for excelling last month.
