USL petition Fifa over charter

The Uganda Super League (USL), managers of the country’s topflight league, have petitioned world governing body, Fifa, over being left out of the ongoing Fufa constitutional review process.

“The Uganda Super League has not been invited to the constitution making process led by Fufa (who are) represented by Mr. Edgar Watson and, Fifa, (represented by) Mr. Mamelodi Ashford, the Development Officer and Mr. Primo Corvaro, Fifa’s Head of National Associations,” reads in part USL’s letter to Fifa secretary general Jérôme Valcke.

The petition dated June 25 is signed by USL CEO Jimmy Ebil Ssegawa and copied to the Minister of State for Sports, the National Council of Sports, Members of USL (Ltd), Fifa Development Officer and Head of Member Associations.

“We hereby confirm to you that we have been left out contrary to your earlier communication in a letter referenced SG/tre/pco,” goes on the petition.

“This further pushes us to the direction of associating with willing and credible associations to constitute a Fufa that is accommodative of all football associations in Uganda. We await your response.”

This comes on the back of Fufa terming the topflight league the “Fufa Super League” in their proposed amendments instead of its known name of “Uganda Super League.”

That in essence excludes the USL from Fufa’s proposed new constitution, a leeway to renewed animosity between the two warring bodies ahead of the new season in September.

The USL were particularly forced to petition Fifa after Fufa invited 16 clubs from the league for a meeting with Mamelodi and Corvaro this Wednesday without including the USL management at all.

“This is to inform all football stakeholders and the entire public that a panel of officials delegated by Fifa will be in the country for a meeting with Fufa and the Uganda Super League clubs on Wednesday 27th June 2012,” reads in part the invite from Fufa.

The Fifa panel will henceforth meet the decision makers of the Uganda Super League clubs with an agenda focused on issues pertaining to top level professional league in compliance with Association Football.”
