Wits, Santos meet in second semifinal

Bidvest Wits and Santos will meet on Sunday afternoon with a place in the 2011/12 Telkom Knockout final on the line. The match takes place at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg, kick-off at 3pm (SA, CAT, GMT+2).

This will be the sixth official cup meeting of the two teams. Santos have three wins to their name, Wits one, and there has been one draw.

The teams met twice in cup games just last season: the People’s Team claimed a 1-0 win in the last 16 of the Telkom Knockout, but the Clever Boys got some revenge with a 1-0 win in the last 32 of the Nedbank Cup.

Wits and Santos have already faced off in a league match this season: the Johannesburg team won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Myeni.

Overall, Wits and Santos have met in 33 matches since 1991. The Cape Town team has 15 wins, the Clever Boys nine, and there has been nine draws.

Wits have reached the semifinals thanks to victories over AmaZulu and Jomo Cosmos in the last 16 and quarterfinals respectively.

This season marks the first time that the Clever Boys are appearing in the semifinals of the Telkom Knockout since its inception in 2006.

Overall, Wits have played seven Telkom Knockout matches with a record of two wins and five losses.

The University-based team has won this cup competition twice in the past: 1985 when it was known as the John Player Special Knockout Cup and 1995 when it was the Coca-Cola Cup.

Santos have reached the semifinals thanks to wins over Maritzburg United and Platinum Stars in the last 16 and quarterfinals respectively.

The People’s Team, in reaching the last four, have matched their best showing in the Telkom Knockout since its inception in 2006 – they also reached the semifinals in 2006/07 and 2010/11.

Overall, the Cape side has played 11 Telkom Knockout matches with a record of five wins, two draws and four losses.

Santos have appeared in one final of this competition: under its previous guise as the Coca-Cola Cup they reached the final in 1993 only to lose to Umtata Bush Bucks 3-1.
