Martins primed for Venezuela test
Levante UD striker, Obafemi Martins is set to put in a big performance against Venezuela on Thursday in Nigeria’s first international friendly after qualifying for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
Martins last played for Nigeria on October 9, 2010 in the 0-1 loss to Guinea in a 2012 Afcon qualifying game in Conakry.
The super quick forward was subsequently frozen out of the national team and did not play under former coach, Samson Siasia as he endured an inconsistent spell at club level with Russian side, Rubin Kazan.
His move to Spain’s La Liga where he teamed up with Levante proved to be the turning point in his international career.
His four goals in seven appearances for the Granotes did not go unnoticed by the Nigerian head coach, Stephen Keshi who promptly handed the 28-year-old a recall against Venezuela.
Martins is fired up ahead of the game against the South Americans and is keen to nail a spot in the team for the 2013 Afcon.
“My return is for real and Nigerians will see,” Martins said.
The Levante attacker also looked extremely sharp in the team’s last training session as he scored several goals to the obvious delight of members of the coaching staff.
Thursday’s game will be played at the Marlins Stadium in Miami from 8pm (Miami time) and from 2am on Thursday Nigerian time.
The game is also live on your World of Champions, SuperSport 3N from 1:55am.< /p>
