Montanier to leave Real Sociedad

Philippe Montanier is poised to leave Liga club Real Sociedad to sign a three-year contract as coach of the French outfit Rennes, media reports in France and Spain said on Monday.

An official announcement had yet to be made from either club, but Montanier was not to extend his contract with Sociedad, which finishes in June.

Montanier, 48, has been in charge at the San Sebastian club since 2011. Last season, his team finished 12th. This season, they are in joint fourth position with Valencia.

Sociedad have been the surprise team of the season in La Liga and would finish fourth - and thereby enter the preliminary round of the Champions league - if they manage to win their final two games: at home to second-placed Real Madrid and away to struggling Deportivo Coruna.

Rennes are 11th in the French Ligue 1 with one game left to play. Their ambitious owner, François Pinault, has said he is determined to build a team capable of taking domestic and European honours.
