Aguirre takes over at troubled Espanyol

Mexican Javier Aguirre has taken over as coach of Espanyol, the struggling Spanish Liga club announced on Wednesday.

He replaces Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino, who was sacked on Monday with Espanyol bottom of the league table. Espanyol are the first Liga club to change coach this season.

Aguirre's contract is due to run until June. His first game in charge will be Sunday's clash at fellow strugglers Granada.

Aguirre, 53, has previously coached Pachuca, the Mexican national team, Osasuna and Atletico Madrid
