Ajax clinch Aegon Copa title

The Ajax Cape Town U19’s clinched the 2013 Aegon Copa Amsterdam Champions, beating Borussia Mönchengladbach 5-4 on penalties in the final after the scores were tied at 2-2 at fulltime.

The ninth edition of the Aegon Copa Amsterdam was played in wet and rainy conditions that soaked the field.

As early as the third minute, Mönchengladbach created the first scoring opportunity but Nickel’s shot at goal was more like a back-pass.

The opening stanza of the game was hampered by the wet conditions; persistent rain fell throughout the game affecting the smooth passing-game of both teams.

Ajax Cape Town settled quickly and created four attempts at goal. Mönchengladbach fought back and the Germans were dangerous via Reitz, but his free kick was parried by the AjaxCT goalkeeper.

Ajax Cape Town broke the deadlock with a quick counter-attack when a cross into the penalty area found Wesson who scored the opening goal.

The field conditions deteriorated as the game continued, continuous rain made underfoot conditions muddy with water puddles forming in patches.

Mönchengladbach’s players grew frustrated as the game continued; the AjaxCT defense held firm and thwarted their every attack

Wesson almost doubled his tally for the game but his shot at goal flew just wide, the miss proved costly when Mönchengladbach equalized with five minutes left on the clock.

The tension amongst the players was tangible as extra time loomed.

AjaxCT were quick out of the starting blocks in extra-time when James scored; his free-kick from 30 yards flew into the back of the net. The Urban Warriors lead was short-lived, Mönchengladbach equalized via Lynda to send the game into the dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Borussia Mönchengladbach and Ajax Cape Town matched each other kick-for-kick; however the Germans missed their two penalties in the sudden death.

The bench of the Urban Warriors erupted in delight when AjaxCT scored their second penalty; the AjaxCT players ran towards their fans and dived into the muddy pitch as they celebrated their win.
