Mokoena talks are ongoing
Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena is still in talks with English League 1 side Portsmouth over a settlement of his contract with the club.
Mokoena wants to return to South Africa to join BidVest Wits, but will not do so until he receives compensation from cash-strapped Portsmouth. Mokoena is seeking around R7.5-million as a pay-out.
But Portsmouth claim that giving him that amount of money would create a precedent for others players that could send the team into liquidation.
“I am still talking with Aaron’s agent in terms of an agreement compromise,” says Trevor Birch, the man appointed as administrator for the team. “I would say at the moment it is going okay.
“We are continuing to talk so you have got to be hopeful an agreement can be reached. As before, we need to remove players from the club’s wage bill and are working hard on trying to achieve that.”
Pompey were relegated to the third tier of English football last season after their financial problems meant they were placed into administration and received a 10-point penalty from the League.
