Surman scores again
South African-born Andrew Surman scored his fourth goal of the English Premiership season as he helped Norwich City to a 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers.
Surman has been in superb form for the Canaries on the left-wing, helping the club into the top-half of the table.
The former England Under-21 international is now back on the radar of national team coach Pitso Mosimane, having reportedly turned down the opportunity to represent South Africa back in 2008.
At that stage Surman was one of the rising stars of English football and a regular in the Under-21 set-up, and might have hoped his future lay with that senior national side.
But that has failed to materialise and looks unlikely to in the future either, meaning he may be more receptive now to having a shot at the Fifa World Cup with the land of his birth.
Surman lived in Johannesburg for the first eight years of his life before his English parents emigrated back to Southampton.
He became the youngest-ever player to turn out for the Southampton reserves aged just 15, before current Arsenal star Theo Walcott took that record from him.
Surman could potentially offer an alternative to Siphiwe Tshabalala on the left-hand side of midfield for Bafana Bafana, with the latter’s recent performances in the national team jersey suggesting competition for his starting place would be beneficial to him in lifting his game.
