Heartland draw a bye in Fed Cup

Federation Cup holders, Heartland, will take no part in the Round of 32 after Thursday's draws in Abuja.

The Owerri club were drawn bye into the next round of the 2013 Federation Cup as defending champions.

Heartland captain, Chinedu Efugh, is happy that his team will be spared of featuring in an additional match this season after he learned of being drawn bye.

"I hear we have been drawn bye. Of course we deserve it as champions. Also, we won't have to bother ourselves about playing more games and that allows us prepare well to defend our title," Efugh, whose nickname is Chicago, said.

Some of the top clashes in the Federation Cup will witness last year's third-placed team, Prime FC confronting former Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Bayelsa United.

Gateway FC will face 3SC while another big game of the round is between Crown FC and Lobi Stars.

Two former Cup winners, Plateau United and Wikki Tourists, will go head-to-head.

Plateau United won the Federation Cup in 1999 while Wikki won the previous year. Coincidentally, Plateau United lost in the 1998 final to Wikki.

So, it looks like a rematch of the 1998 Cup final between the two sides and unarguably the biggest game of the round.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is yet to announce dates and venues for the Cup matches.
