Joel Obi returns

Europe’s top leagues are slowly stirring from hibernation as action returned to the top flight in England, Spain, Italy and Portugal.

With the crème de la crème of the country’s ambassadors abroad currently at the 2013 Afcon camp in Faro, Portugal, no Nigerian goal was recorded in Europe’s top leagues at the weekend.

On a quiet weekend which simmered but failed to boil over from a Nigerian perspective, supersport now rounds up all the action.

England (Premier League)

Peter Odemwingie missed out on West Bromwich Albion’s 2-3 loss at Reading. The forward has been linked with a move to Queens Park Rangers in recent days.

Hope Akpan who recently completed a move from League one side, Crawley Town was an unused substitute for Reading.

Victor Anichebe was on for 84 minutes but failed to inspire Everton in the club’s 0-0 draw at home to Swansea.

France (Ligue 1)

Simon Zenke was not listed for AS Nancy in the 2-2 draw against Lille OSC.

John Utaka played the entire game for Montpellier in the 2-0 win over Lorient at the Stade La Mosson.

Onyekachi Apa played all 90 minutes for Rennes who lost at home, 0-2 to Girondins Bordeaux.

Italy (Serie A)

Joel Obi has finally made his return from the niggling thigh injury that has ruled him out of action in recent weeks.

The midfielder was an unused substitute for Inter Milan as the Nerazzurri beat Pescara 2-0 at San Siro.

Portugal (Super Liga)

John Ogu was not listed for Academica Coimbra in the club’s emphatic 4-2 win at home to Victoria Setubal.

Spain (La Liga)

Obafemi Martins was drafted in as a second half substitute for Levante, to little effect, as they capitulated to a 0-2 defeat to Real Betis at the Benito Villamarin.
