Oboabona earns rave reviews

Former Sunshine Stars manager, Gbenga Ogunbote, is relishing the expected debut of the club’s skipper, Godfrey Oboabona, at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Super Eagles supremo, Stephen Keshi, gave Oboabona his international debut against Angola in 2012 and the central defender has since progressed in the set-up.

The versatile Oboabona featured regularly as the Eagles qualified for the 2013 Afcon and is at present in Faro, Portugal, as the preparation for the competition continues.

“I’m excited that Oboabona is headed for the Afcon. I give glory to God for his progress because he’s a hardworking player.

“It’s every player’s dream to represent the country and he has done well so far. I want to see him play at Afcon,” Ogunbote said to supersport.com.

Ogunbote revealed that Oboabona has learnt useful lessons from the participation of Sunshine Stars in the continent’s club competitions: the Caf Confederation Cup and Champions League, respectively.

“Oboabona led Sunshine for three consecutive seasons as captain and we had back-to-back campaigns on the continent.

“We played against the best on the continent and some of these teams had players who are regulars in their national teams.

“Any creative manager will like Oboabona for his versatility. The only position he didn’t play was in goal. I’ve used him in the midfield, both sides of the defence and even as an attacker,” Ogunbote told supersport.com.

Oboabona is expected to increase his international caps when the Eagles play Cape Verde in Wednesday's pre-Afcon friendly.
