Moses continues to impress

The top leagues of Europe are slowly stirring after a brief period of hibernation and as always, Nigerians are getting into the groove.

Victor Moses was the only goal-scorer of note as he helped Chelsea to a 5-1 victory over Southampton in the FA Cup third round.

Obafemi Martins was surprisingly left out of the Levante side that thrashed Athletic Bilbao 3-1 at the Ciudad de Valencia while Odion Ighalo continued his steady progress at Granada.

In another weekend that saw big guns, John Mikel Obi and Peter Odemwingie miss out on the action for their respective clubs, supersport.com runs the rule on how Nigerians performed at the weekend.

England (FA Cup)

Mikel was left out of the Chelsea side that thumped Southampton 5-1 in one of the third round FA Cup games decided at the weekend.

Moses scored Chelsea’s second goal against the Saints.

Odemwingie was not listed for West Bromwich Albion in the Baggies’ 1-1 draw at Queens Park Rangers.

The forward and his wife, Sarah are expecting their first child in a matter of days.

Italy (Serie A)

Ohenyi Onazi is already in Faro, Portugal with the Super Eagles preparing for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and duly missed SS Lazio’s 2-1 win over Cagliari at the Stadio Olimpico.

It was terrible day for Inter Milan as they suffered a three-nil beating in the hands of Udinese at the Stadio Fruilli.

Joel Obi, recently sidelined by a thigh injury, played no part in the game for Inter.

Portugal (Super Liga)

Uwa Echiejile came on as an 88th minute substitute for Braga SC in the club’s 1-0 win at home to Moreirense.

Spain (La Liga)

Nosa Igiebor was on for 53 minutes for Real Betis as the Verdiblancos won 2-1 at Real Zaragoza.

Martins was not listed for Levante as his side claimed a 3-1 win at home to Athletic Bilbao.

Ighalo led the line for Granada from start to finish in 1-2 home loss to Valencia.
