Martins, Uche lead by example

It was a good week for Nigerians in Europe at the weekend with Obafemi Martins and Kalu Uche both scoring brilliant goals for their respective clubs in Spain and Turkey.

Both players have been leading by example this term and currently top the scorer’s chart at their clubs.

John Obi Mikel begins his three-match ban in England while his teammate at Chelsea, Victor Moses continues to win favour with Blues manager, Rafael Benitez.

In a weekend of breathless action, supersport.com now rounds up all the action involving Nigerians in Europe’s top leagues.

Austria (Tipp-3 Bundesliga)

Peter Edomwonyi was an unused substitute for Red Bull Salzburg in the 1-1 draw against Sturm Graz at the UPC-Arena.

The 19-year-old has rarely featured for Salzburg this term.

Belgium (Jupiler Super League)

Michael Uchebo came on in the 89th minute for Cercle Brugge in the 1-1 draw at home to OH Leuven.

The former Enugu Rangers forward was a 59th minute substitute for Cercle Brugge in the club’s 1-2 loss to Anderlecht at the Stade Constant Vanden Stock last week as the Cercle manager, Foeke Booy continues to place his faith in the former Chelsea forward, Eidur Gudjohnsen who scored the club’s only goal .

Derrick ‘Chuka’ Ogbu was part of the action for OH Leuven as he played for 66 minutes.

Chuka was also part of the Leuven side that drew 1-1 draw at home to AA Gent last week.

He was booked in the game and subsequently substituted after 60 minutes.

Ezekiel Imoh scored for Standard Liege in the 6-1 win against Charleroi.

The 19-year-old Imoh is the top scorer at his club this season.

England (Barclays English Premier League)

Mikel served the first of his three-match suspension while Moses started for Chelsea in their 3-1 win at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland.

Moses was hooked just after the hour with Ryan Bertrand coming in for the former Wigan Athletic winger.
