NSC in the dark over NPL crisis

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has stated that it has no business in the current impasse in the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).

Director-General of the NSC, Dr Patrick Ekeji, made it clear that the commission, which also doubles as the Nigerian sports ministry, is not the supervising body of the Premier League.

The former Nigerian coach added that the ministry has been concerned with the ongoing sports festival and played no role in the current crisis threatening the administration of the Premier League.

"How can anyone say we have played a role in the NPL crisis? They (NPL) have their supervising body and it is not the sports ministry. Why would we want to interfere in what happens at the NPL where we have no business?

"Right now we don't have such money to spend because we are concerned with other pressing matters. So we have no business in the NPL crisis. We are more concerned with what is going on at the sports festival," Ekeji remarked.

On Wednesday, 18 clubs converged in the Nigerian capital, Abuja and passed a vote of no confidence on the NPL board chaired by Victor Baribote Rumson.

The clubs subsequently dissolved the Premier League board and constituted a six-man interim management committee headed by Mike Idoko.

But the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) reinstated the NPL board and ordered that a "proper congress" be held in Abuja next week.
