Kaduna are pre-season champs
Hosts, Kaduna United emerged champions at the five-day pre-season championship by beating Wikki Tourists 6-5 on penalties on Wednesday.
The first half was full of so much finesse as both sides mesmerising themselves but no goal was recorded.
Kaduna United's Daddy Ajala would have gotten United off to a perfect start in the 50th minute when Nelson Onyekachi picked him out unmarked at the far post, but his downward header lacked power and ended up safely in the arms of Wikki Tourists' goalkeeper, Daniel Achemogu.
The hosts would, however, remain indebted to their goalkeeper, Raymond Godwin as his fantastic save in the 80th minute denied Tourists' Wasiu Razak from scoring.
The home fans were growing increasingly restless as Kaduna United retained the ball with little difficulty and their mood did not improve when Abdullahi Yau was given time and space to drill a 25-yard shot in the 85th minute, but his effort went past the post with Tourists' goalkeeper, Achemogu at full stretch.
Wikki Tourists would have snatched victory at the death when Issa Ibrahim and Shaki Adeyemi combined to set up substitute, Monday Lawrence only for United's goalkeeper, Godwin to block with his legs and the game went straight to penalties.
Kaduna United's Yau was the hero as his last penalty kick sent Tourists' keeper, Achemogu in the wrong direction for the winner.
United's captain, Emmanuel Ambrose was in cloud nine lifting his first career trophy.
“This is the first time in my life that I will touch a trophy and I pray I would lift the NPL title as well this coming season,” he said to supersport.com afterwards.
Earlier, champions, Kano Pillars defeated Dynamic Sports Solution 3-0 to win the third place duel.
