Gunners escape show of shame

It was a show of shame in Algeria yesterday where members of the Sunshine Stars football team were pelted with rocks and foreign objects while beating ASO Chlef during matchday 4 of the ACL.

The Akure Gunners solidated their 2nd place in Group B with a sound outing twice going ahead of the Algerians who finally let their frustration get the better of them.

Cameroonian midfielder, Tamen Medrano put the Nigerians ahead shortly before the break and they have sealed the deal except for poor finishing. Rather it was the North Africans who struck back drawing blood shortly afterwards when Anicet Eyenga put ASO Chlef on even terms.

But the Gunners held serve and with less than 15 mins to go it was Ukeyima Akombo who tagged the ‘onion basket’ and sealed the victory for the West Africans. And it when then that the vile bombardment to the dismay of the observing Caf officials as well as the visiting entourage started from the stands. An angry Medrano told SuperSport “this is a disgrace and hopefully Caf will come down hard on the hosts”.

Luckily nobody was seriously hurt and the Sunshine Stars can return to Nigeria content with a well deserved victory and happy that despite their poor start they have clawed their way back into serious contention.
