Gambo renews top scorer's claim

Kano Pillars' striker, Gambo Mohammed has renewed his claim for the top scorer's gong with a target of 25 goals.

The lanky goal poacher scored a brace in the 3-1 defeat of visiting Kaduna United on Matchday 19 at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano ending the first term on seven goals, two goals adrift leader, Mustapha Babadidi of Gombe United.

Nasiru Ali scored the third goal in the 76th minute while the visitors' consolation came in the 52nd minute through Ya'u Abdullahi.

Gambo told SuperSport.com that his brace showed his desire to enter into the ring for the top scorer's spot.

"I am happy ending the first stanza on seven goals, as the second stanza will be better and I want to tell anybody who cares to listen that I am in the race for the top scorer's award.

"My personal target for the season is 25 goals. I know I am two goals behind leader, Gombe United's Mustapha Babadidi and a goal to few others.

"But I am happy going into second term with seven goals. In the second stanza I'm confident I will shoot to the top.

"I'm happy too that we won our last game of the first term and have a chance of climbing to the top.

"Pillars want to be champions, we're united to do our best in that direction. We'll consolidate on our position and improve upon it as we move on with the season," he said.

Gambo described their Matchday 19 opponents, Kaduna United as a tough side who gave them a run for their money.

"Ordinarily, one would take a glance at the goal margin and say Kaduna United were cheap. I want to say, they were tough.

"I want to say we're lucky to have converted our chances, the game could have gone either way," he said

Pillars finished the first stanza on 32 points from possible 57 and could end up as leaders at the end of the first round.
