Duo earn plaudits for Guinea show

In spite of the loss suffered by Nigeria’s campaign to win a berth to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Conakry against Guinea, two players, Ahmed Musa and John Owoeri, have received high marks for their performances in Sunday’s game.

Musa and Owoeri came on as late substitutes in the encounter and clearly turned things around though Nigeria’s Super Eagles failed to earn a point after trailing in the game against the Syli Stars of Guinea for over 80 minutes. Kano Pillars’ head coach, Salisu Yusuf, told SuperSport.com after watching the game on Sunday it was clear that the duo brought zest into a Nigerian side lacking dimension.

“From what I saw, Ahmed Musa and John (Owoeri) brought life back into the team’s approach. But they could not earn that one point, which is quite unfortunate. And I must say I am not surprised with the performance of the two players because I know them well,” said Yusuf, who was Musa’s coach until last season when the teenage striker left Kano Pillars.

Crown Football Club coach, Godfrey Esu, clearly stated that Musa and Owoeri “demonstrated that there are quality players in the Nigeria Premier League.”

He said the players apart from exhibiting the ability to peg back the incursions of the Guineans from the wings, they displayed hunger.

“They have shown that they are not just good players but also players who give everything when they are on the pitch. I hope they will get regular appearances in the team in future to help build their confidence,” he said.
