Sundowns target cup success

The Nedbank Cup offers a chance for Mamelodi Sundowns to salvage some pride this season, according to the side's technical director, Trott Moloto.

The league is now out of grasp for the star studded Brazilians, who aim to end a five-year trophy drought and bag some success after a near disastrous start to their campaign.

On Monday night, they were drawn to meet Ajax Cape Town away in one of three all-Premiership clashes in the first round of the competition.

"Our coach (Pitso Mosimane) has already indicated that he would like to see the club win something this season," Moloto said.

"This trophy is a perfect opportunity for the club, but we have to play the first round match and then take things from there."

The Urban Warriors will face an improved Sundowns, who have been turned around by Mosimane since taking over from Dutchman Johan Neeskens last month.

The defending champions, SuperSport United, will begin their title defence with a tough fixture against Moroka Swallows. These sides met in the MTN8 final earlier this season, with the Birds coming out winners.

However, United have been in solid cup form in the last year, and were semifinalists in the Telkom Knockout in November, despite their indifferent form in the Premiership.

Swallows coach Zeca Marques said he expected a spirited performance from Matsatsantsa a Pitori.

"It's going to be a challenging game, being drawn with another team playing in the PSL," Marques said on Tuesday.

"A bit of spark will be added since we've played them in the MTN8 final and they could look for revenge."

Wits hosts Kaizer Chiefs, after eliminating the Premiership leaders in the first round of the Telkom Knockout competition.

Chiefs are known cup specialists and have won this trophy an unprecedented 12 times, despite never lifting it under the current sponsors, who have been part of South Africa's FA Cup since 2007.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates will travel to the Free State to play third tier side Maluti FET College.

The cup competition starts on February 22, with the Premier Soccer League set to finalise dates and venues at a later stage.

The eight First Division preliminary matches to determine the unconfirmed spots in the first round proper will be played on February 13.
