Tuks through to Nedbank Cup last-32

The 16 National First Division (NFD) sides were in action in preliminary-round ties for the 2012 Nedbank Cup tournament on Wednesday.

The fixture were used to determine the eight teams from this division who will join the 16 Premier League clubs and eight sides from the Vodacom League/SAB Regional League in the first round proper starting in early March.

Current First Division leaders University of Pretoria continued their fine form of late as they beat Dynamos 3-1 away from home to seal a last-32 spot.

AmaTuks were finalists in the 2009 version of the Nedbank Cup, but went down 1-0 to Moroka Swallows with a side that included the likes of Andile Jali, Mthokozisi Yende and Phenyo Mongala.

Second-placed Thanda Royal Zulu lost 1-0 away at third-placed Blackburn Rovers in what was arguably the plum tie of the round. Thanda coach Neil Tovey was in charge of AmaZulu when they lost the 2010 Nedbank Cup final to BidVest Wits.

Mpumalanga Black Aces, finalists in 2008 before losing to Mamelodi Sundowns, were also winners on Wednesday as Denis Masina put them into the last 32 with the only goal in a 1-0 win over strugglers Atlie FC.

Witbank Spurs left their NFD woes behind them to thump FC AK 4-1 and advance. Spurs have won just two of their 14 League matches to date but finally found their goal-scoring touch on Wednesday.

Bay United overcame Chippa United 1-0, while Sivutsa Stars were far too strong for Carara Kicks and finished 3-0 winners in their tie.

United FC caused something of a surprise when they won 2-1 after extra time at Vasco da Gama and African Warriors defeated FC Cape Town 2-0 to complete a dismal day for the Mother City teams.
