Pelembe for Mozambique scores in qualifier

Elias Pelembe scored for Mozambique on Tuesday to ensure their safe progress through to the next phase of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers with a 4-1 win over the Comoros Islands in Maputo.

Having missed the first leg against the Comoros Islands on Friday, Pelembe returned to the starting-up for the second leg and got the opening goal as the Mambas went on to a 5-1 aggregate win.

They now go into Group G with Guinea, Zimbabwe and open up the group in June with a tough away game against Egypt.

The Mamelodi Sundowns wingback was the only Premier Soccer League -based player in the Mozambique team but former Bidvest Wits and Platinum Stars wingback Miro also competed.

Orlando Pirates striker Rudolph Bester was unable to add to the two goals he scored against Djibouti on Friday but started for Namibia as they replicated the score line in Tuesdays’ second leg at the Windhoek’s Independence Stadium.

Bester and AmaZulu striker Tangeni Shipahu were both taken off in the second half when it became apparent that Namibia had the result sewn up. Two of their goals came from former Jomo Cosmos midfielder Lazarus Kaimbi, who now plays in Thailand.

Platinum Stars striker Henrico Botes missed Tuesday’s return match after being injured in Djibouti in the first leg.

Free State Stars defender Sadat Ouro-Akoriko and midfielder Dove Wome featured on Tuesday for Togo as they booked a place in the second phase of the World Cup qualifiers with a 1-0 home win over Guinea Bissau.

Togo had drawn 1-1 away in the first leg and progressed 2-1 on aggregate to the group phase which starts in June.

Ouro-Akoriko and Wome featured in the starting line-up alongside the returning Emmanuel Adebayor, playing his first game for his country after an absence of almost two years.

Wome was taken off just on the hour mark but Ouro-Akoriko played the entire 90 minutes.
