Goal aggregate wins Silver Malawi league

Silver Strikers were, for the third consecutive season, crowned officially as the TNM Super League champion at Civo Stadium on Sunday, ending weeks of suspense and anxiety.

Silver retained the crown on a healthy goal aggregate after a 1-0 loss to fourth-placed Mighty Wanderers put the Bankers at par on 58 points with Big Bullets.

To upstage Silver, Bullets needed to beat Red Lions by at least a 10-goal margin but could only managed a 3-0 win at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre. Gabadinho Mhango netting twice and Diverson Mlozi once for the Bullets.

And when Wanderers' Mike Kaputa sliced the ball into the net deep in the second half to stun Silver in Lilongwe, there was remote hope for Bullets in Blantyre. But eventually a miracle refused to happen and sports minister Enock Chihana crowned Silver the winner.

Bullets finished second on 58 points due to an inferior goal aggregate. Blantyre United ended on third place with 51 points after beating Azam Tigers on Friday then losing 3-1 to Epac FC at the giant Blantyre arena. In another game to wind up the season, Wanderers had on Saturday lost 2-0 to Mafco in Chitowe.

On the individual front, striker Vincent Chinthenga of relegated Bvumbwe Research finished the season as the top scorer on 18 goals in 28 league games. Bvumbwe got relegated alongside Escom United and Kabwafu.
