Mixed results in friendlies
Ulinzi Stars were held to 1-1 draw by Finlays Horticulture in a friendly match on Thursday as Kenyan Premier League [KPL] rookies Kakamega Homeboyz and Bandari picked-up morale boosting wins ahead of the 2013 KPL season.
In a match played at the Kingfisher grounds, Samuel Gitonga put Finlays in front with a clinical finish, but Mulinge Ndeto’s strike salvaged a draw for the soldiers.
At Bukhungu Stadium, Homeboyz labored to beat their bitter rivals West Kenya Sugar 3-2 in a thrilling ‘Western derby’.
Homeboyz got their goals through Griffins Amatala, Dennis Orenge and Keiphas Baraza, while Jackson Sitati and Hezron Onchiri scored for the Division One League side.
New acquisition Roosevelt Blaty netted the important goal of the match as Bandari stunned Coast United 1-0 in the Hussein Terry Cup in Mombasa. In another friendly match, Karuturi Sports were forced to a barren draw by visiting Thika United, at Old Trafford Stadium.
All the teams were using the friendly matches in preparations for the upcoming 2013 season. Ulinzi, the 2010 KPL champions, will kick-off their title campaign on February 24 with a home match against Bandari while Homeboyz play host to Karuturi Sports.
Thika will travel to Nairobi to face Sofapaka.
