Mapunda braced for competition
Gor Mahia goalkeeper Ivo Mapunda has welcomed competition for the club’s goalkeeping position and feels that it will enhance the club’s playing unit.
Mapunda has been a second choice goalie since he arrived at Gor last season, playing second fiddle to Jerim Onyango. This year, he will have more competition in the shape of Zachary Onyango, the former Sofapaka keeper who has arrived in the current transfer window.
Mapunda, a former Tanzanian international keeper admits that it will be tough getting a regular spot but he is up for the challenge.
“The competition is now tough. Very tough. The keepers we have here are all top class and have a proven track record,” he said.
“Jerim is the captain and played alot of the times last season so he is well known. I also hear a lot about Zachary and have seen him while here. A very good keeper. I will also stake my claim this season and have a chance to play regularly as I have been working hard in training and doing my best.
“Hopefully I will play more than I did last season,” he said. Mapunda was Gor’s number one in the President’s Cup last season, where he helped them to victory and he feels that he can do just as well if given more time.
“If I get more time to play then I will hopefully do well. I try keep my fitness levels very high and my form as good as I can then I hope for the best. This season, if I can help us win again, I will be happy,” he added. Gor will also take part in the Caf Confederations Cup this season.
