Azam edge out KCB in friendly
Tanzania Vodacom Premier League outfit Azam managed a narrow 1-0 win over Kenyan Premier League side KCB in a friendly match played at the City Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The Mapinduzi Cup champions prevailed through striker Ibrahim Mwaipopo’s 47th minute goal, which came courtesy of the penalty spot.
The bankers were guilty of defensive lapses and could have conceded again just before the final whistle but their goalkeeper Sammy Okinda was alert to the danger.
This result is the second win for the Tanzanian Ice Cream makers after their 1-0 victory over former Kenyan champions Sofapaka this past Sunday. They, however, lost 2-1 to AFC Leopards a day earlier in an entertaining match.
Azam and the Tusker Premier League teams were using the matches to prepare for their respective campaigns, as the Tanzanian League is currently on a mid-season break, while the 2013 Kenyan Premier League will kick off in midway through February.
Azam finished second in the standings last term behind champions Simba, and are fighting to floor the Msimbazi Street Boys this time round. They managed to sign former Tusker FC defender Jockins Atudo while ex-Sofapaka midfielder Humphery Mieno joined the club on loan during the current transfer window.
