Perfect start for Were at Tusker
Newly signed Tusker FC forward Jesse Were is proving to be a great bargain for the Kenyan Premier League champions.
Were signed from former KPL greats Mathare United at the end of the 2012 domestic season, and scored five goals to emerge as the top scorer at the Mapinduzi Cup tournament, even as his team emerged second best, falling 2-1 to Tanzanian heavyweights Azam FC.
The striker was named to feature in five matches at the tournament and he scored in all of them, including the final match, and for his effort he was awarded a cash prize of 300,000 Tanzanian shillings (approximately 17,000 Kenyan Shillings).
The second best on the scorers’ list was another Kenyan, defender Jockins Atudo, formerly of Tusker, but currently listed as an Azam player after making the move late in December 2012.
He finished with four goals alongside Adeyum Saleh of Zanzibar champions Miembeni FC. Tusker FC’s youthful new signing Michael Olunga also featured among the top scorers at the tournament; he scored two goals in the tournament.
Gaudence Mwaikimba of Azam FC, Haruna Chanogo of Simba SC and Mfanyeje Musa of Jamhuri FC also scored twice each to make an appearance among the top scorers.
Tusker FC, who will be taking part in the Caf Champions League, were using the tournament to prepare for their continental engagements.
