Top players attend City Stars trials

A number of established players who have previously played for Kenyan Premier League clubs have been attending the ongoing Nairobi City Stars trials at the City Stadium.

Former Harambee Stars, Azam FC (Tanzania) and Randers (Denmark) forward George ‘Blackberry’ Odhiambo, Ex-Tusker midfield kingpin Crispin ‘Alphy’ Olando and former Sofapaka forward Demonde Selenga were part of the players that attended day two of the trials.

However, City Stars head coach Bye Wadda says he is not going for big names and the fact that a player has previously played in the top-tier is not a guarantee that he will be signed by the team.

“What we are having are open trials and I’m also putting our current players to test. No one is guaranteed a place in the team and they have to prove it to me in the field that they deserve to be in this team for the 2013 season,” the Gambian said.

“I do not know the players well but even national team players are here for trials. They are not guaranteed a place in my team but if any of them impresses me with his skill and tact then I will sign him,” he added.

Over 60 players turned out in the second day of the trials but Wadda says he will trim them to 40 and further to 30 by Friday – which is the last day of the trials.

“We have to maintain a squad of 25 players or at most 26 players, and by Monday 14 January I will release my 2013 full squad list,” he said.
