Mieno joins Azam on loan



Sofapaka FC midfielder Humphrey Mieno has joined Tanzanian side Azam FC on a six-month loan deal.

The move was confirmed by Sofapaka president Elly Kalekwa, who said that Azam will provide a good platform for the player to develop his talent, as he awaits the opportunity to attend trials in Cyprus.

“We have had intense talks with Azam on the player’s move and we have agreed that he will be them on a short-term contract. This is primarily because he is set to attend trials in Cyprus next year and we did not want to see him get bound by contracts, if the European move materialised,” explained Kalekwa.

“But Azam is still a very good team for the player and we are sure that in his time there he will learn a lot, further improving his skill.”

In the recently concluded season, Mieno netted five goals to become Sofapaka’s second top scorer, after John Baraza, who took home the league’s golden boot award, netting 18 times.

Mieno becomes the second Kenyan to join Azam in less than a week, after defender Jockins Atudo penned a one-year contract with the side from Tusker FC.

The duo made the squad that travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo for an invitational tournament, that will feature, among other teams, TP Mazembe and AC Leopards.
