Obungu tips Stars to do better

Former Kenya goalkeeper Wilson Obungu believes the Harambee Stars can impress in international assignments with better preparation.

The national team recently took part in the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup competition, losing 2-1 in the final to hosts Uganda.

Obungu feels the side did well. However, he has called on the Football Kenya Federation to provide greater assistance following reports of a wage dispute on the eve of the final on Saturday.

The money issues are thought to have possibly put the players in a negative frame of mind ahead of the showpiece decider.

“The team played well at the tournament. If only they were motivated well before and during the competition, we would not be saying second place is good and all that. But all the same, they deserve a pat on the back because the team was mainly made of young players who were making the debuts,” said Obungu.

“My appeal is just that the federation puts the team’s plans up early so that we do not see a repeat of the incidents at Cecafa.

This tournament is always held in December, which means they have a whole 12 months to prepare every year so there is no way we should find ourselves in such a situation.”
