Football scoops awards at SOYA



Football was the recipient of several awards during the annual Safaricom Sports Personality of The Year Awards held on Thursday.

The national under 20 women’s team won the women’s team of the year award after their thrilling world cup qualifiers during which they came within a whisker of qualifying for the world event.

Celtic Midfielder Victor Wanyama was named the second runners up in the Sportsman of The Year category after his exploits in Scotland where he won the SPL title and has played a huge role in the team’s progression in the Champions League.

In the men’s Sports Team of the year, league champions Tusker retained the title they won last year while Top 8 and President’s Cup winners Gor Mahia were voted second ahead of rugby team Kenya Harlequins who came third.

National under 20 girls captain Neddy Atieno was named the second runners up in the most promising category for girls.

World 800 metres record holder and Olympic champion David Rudisha clinched the overall Sports Personality of the Year following his incredible performance at the Olympics.

London marathon champion Mary Keitany was voted the Sportswoman of the Year ahead of Olympic 5,000 metres silver medallist Vivian Cheruiyot and Priscah Jeptoo.

The awards which are in their ninth year were started by cross country legend Paul Tergat and seek to honour sportsmen and women from sporting disciplines.
