Premier League players for varsity games
Tusker Premier League stars Bernard Mang’oli and Paul Mungai Kiongera are in demand as the Kenyan top tier draws to a close.
The two, who play for AFC Leopards and KCB respectively, are set to represent Kenyatta University (KU) in an upcoming regional tournament.
With the Inter-University Games around the corner, the two are expected to prove an asset to KU, who hope to represent the country at the continental event in neighboring Tanzania in January 2013.
According to KU head coach Vince Ombiji, the team has a lot of talent but Mang’oli and Kiongera will add some valuable experience.
“I am hoping to have the players in the team by the time the regional tournament kicks off but qualifying for it is the main target for now,” explained Ombiji.
“We are targeting to be among the best here at home so that we can qualify for the tournament and represent the nation.”
Ombiji’s outfit are expected to be among the six qualifying teams for the tournament that will bring together universities from East African countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.
Ombiji will, however, have to do without Mang’oli and Kiongera for this weekend’s qualifiers to be staged at the Nairobi University Grounds on Saturday and Sunday. This is because the pair are still tied up with club duties.
Mungai’s KCB are hosting Sofapaka at City Stadium, while Kiongera’s AFC Leopards are entertaining former league champions Mathare United at the Mumias Complex.
