Gor Mahia: team to watch in the KPL

As the grueling Kenya Premier League(KPL) new season kicks off on Saturday, focus will centre on Gor Mahia who remain the only team that has clinched the League title 13 times since the event was inaugurated in 1963.

In 48 years of existence , with an exception of just one year - 1971 - reasons not clear for failure to ascertain the winner - only 12 clubs have shared the titles with Gor Mahia FC leading the pack having won it 13 times followed closely by 11 times winners AFC Leopards.

Kenya Breweries who later changed their name to Tusker FC are 3rd having lifted the trophy on 9 occasions with Ulinzi as distant followers with a record of 4 times.

2012 KPL new comers Oserian, Luo Union and Nakuru All Stars have won it twice while Sofapaka FC 2009, Mathare United 2008, Sony Sugar 2006, Defunct Utalii 1997 and Feisal 1965 have had a chance to lift the trophy only once. Gor Mahia FC and Ulinzi FC are the only clubs that have clinched the league title 3 times in a row. Gor won it in 1983/84/85 while Ulinzi replicated the same in 2003/04/05.

Popularly nicknamed Gor K'Ogalo, the team has bounced back to the International limelight. They will represent the country in the Africa Confederation Cup where they are paired against Ferroviaro of Mozambiqie.Gor will travel away to Maputo for the first leg encounter slated for February 18th.

Apart from the Confederation Cup, the glamour team with arguably the most enticing and cheering fans in Kenya will defend the FKF Cup title, and the Top Eight tournament.Last week the club lost on penalty shoot-out 3-1 to KPL Champions in the DSTv Super Cup after a 1-1 regulation time draw.
