KPL Week 15 Preview
Tusker face KCB, Sofapaka travel to Western Kenya while the first Mombasa derby in ages takes place as KPL gets to the penultimate week of the first leg this weekend.
Thursday 16th June
Western Stima Vs Sofapaka (Bhukungu Stadium)
Western Stima are fifth on the log with 21 points but have two matches in hand. The Kakamega side will be seeking another glorious win against a Sofapaka side that they knocked out of the Top 8 tourney.
Coach Henry Omino has a decent record against the 2009 champions having blanked them 3-0 in the corresponding fixture last season.
They take on a Sofapaka side that produced a superb performance to beat Club Africain 3-1 last weekend and even though the win was not enough to progress in the Confederations Cup, it will have done their confidence a world of good.
Coach Francis Kimanzi has vowed to win all remaining matches in the first leg to ensure a respectable finish and he will rely on John Baraza and Bob Mugalia to find the goals for him.
Our Prediction: 1-2
Mathare United Vs AFC Leopards (Nyayo Stadium)
It’s been a terrible season for Mathare United who find themselves second from bottom with only eleven points.
Coach Salim Ali is feeling the pressure after losing two and drawing two of their last four matches which has seen the team slide into the relegation zone.
They face an AFC Leopards side that has undergone major changes in recent weeks. The club released nine players and is in the process of recruiting their replacements.
Since his appointment, Coach Nick Yakhama has won just one match and he needs a win quieten murmurs of discontent.
Our Prediction: 1-1
Saturday 18th June
STAR MATCH: Tusker Vs KCB(Nyayo)
Both teams suffered shock defeats last weekend.
Tusker might have taken the foot off the pedal in recent weeks with one win in their last five but they remain within touching distance of leaders Rangers. They have beefed up their squad with Itubu Imbem and Ibrahim Kitawi.
The bankers have also stuttered of late but Coach Leonard Saleh is confident that they can get back to winning ways against the brewers.
To beat Tusker, they will need Clifford Alwanga to find his scoring boots and start scoring goals again.
Our Prediction: 2-1
Sony Sugar Vs City Stars (Awendo)
Sony Sugar were stunned by Karuturi last weekend and will be hoping to bounce back against City Stars.
Joshua Oyoo and Chamberi Marwa will lead the hunt for goals for the Awendo based side while there maybe a cameo appearance for Enock Agwanda.
They face a City Stars that beat Mathare United 2-0 last weekend to continue their giant killing act this season. The Kawangare side maybe bottom of the log but they have a penchant for doing well against the top sides which will send wary signs to Sony.
With Jimmy Bagaye having decamped to AFC Leopards, the onus will be on last weekend’s Francis Thairu to repeat his scoring feats away from home.
Our Prediction: 2-1
Ulinzi Stars Vs Karuturi (Afraha)
Reigning champions Ulinzi Stars have stealthily crept up the log quietly racking up win after win in the last few weeks.
A win over Karuturi will be their fifth in eight matches and Coach Benjamin Nyangweso attributes this rich vein of form to teamwork.
Karuturi are enjoying a good run themselves having garnered eight points out of a possible 12 in the last month.
Scoring goals remains their biggest problem and coach James Nandwa will hope that veteran striker Jacob “Abu” Omondi can again come up with the goods.
Our Prediction: 1-0
Sunday 19th June
Chemelil Vs Gor Mahia (Afraha)
This match was initially scheduled for Chemelil Complex but was moved to Afraha stadium due to security reasons.
Chemelil’s new coach Edward Manoah has made a solid start with two straight wins including last weekend’s last gasp victory over KCB.
They are up against a Gor Mahia side which has not played since their draw with Sofapaka three weeks ago.
Kogalo will be wary of the sugarmen who hammered them 3-0 in the corresponding fixture last season.
Moses Odhiambo, Anthony Akumu, Edwin Lavatsa and Eric Masika have been instrumental this season and will be called upon to inspire the boys in green to victory.
Our Prediction: 1-3
Congo United Vs Bandari (Mbaraki)
The first Mombasa derby in decades takes place this Sunday as Congo welcome Bandari. Both teams go into the match in good nick after impressive victories last weekend and this one promises fireworks.
Congo are currently 13th one point ahead of Bandari who are a place and a point behind in 14th place.
Rama Salim has been instrumental for Congo while Zuberi Kombo has been banging in goals for Bandari.
Our Prediction: 2-1
Rangers Vs Western Stima (City Stadium)
Rangers conclude their first leg this weekend and would want to sign off a highly impressive first leg with victory over Stima.
The league leaders surprisingly lost last weekend and will look to bounce back.
Stima will have to show endurance as they will have played Sofapaka in a tough midweek match.
Our Prediction: 2-2
