Milan visit Lazio in Serie A

February starts with Lazio-Milan, a classic in Italian football that comes only 6 days after the League Cup match played at the San Siro.

The club from the capital and the Rossoneri have crossed swords at the Stadio Olimpico 68 times with a reasonably balanced record. 20 wins for the Italian champions against 15 for the home team. The most common result between the two teams has been a draw as has happened on 33 different occasions.

The last time the two teams faced off was on 22 September 2010, another midweek match. It was Round 4 of last season. Milan took the lead through Ibrahimovic on 65’ and a quarter of an hour later it was Floccari who equalized for the hosts. It was a useful draw for Milan, as at the time Lazio were sitting on top of the table.

The last time the Rossoneri came home with a win was on 8 November 2008. A 2-1 score line at the Stadio olimpico with the first goal of his Milan career being scored by Thiago Silva on '21. Pato doubled the lead on 35’. Thiago Silva got his second (this time an own goal) on 35’ which gave the home side some hope that only let them down.

The season before that, the Rossoneri left the Stadio Olimpico 3-0 winners. Pato opened the scoring on 42’ and the lead was doubled on 48’ through Ambrosini. Kakà put the result beyond doubt on 83’.

Milan got another win on 7 October 2007. This time a 5-1 victory with both Kakà and Gillardino getting doubles. The last time Lazio won was 11 years ago during the 1997-1998 season when Mancini and Boksic cancelled out Kluivert’s goal.

The true scourge of Lazio in any case, remains Andriy Schevchenko. The Rossoneri legend got a double in the Stadio Olimpico in 2004 and a hat-trick in 1999 in what was an unforgettable match finally ending up 4-4.

Another memorable game was the one in the 2003-2004 season when Massimo Ambrosini scored with headed goal to give the visitors a 1-0 win.
