Hummels extends Dortmund contract
German central defender Mats Hummels has extended his contract with German domestic douwinners Borussia Dortmund for another three years until June 2017, the club announced on Sunday.
The 23-year-old, who is a member of Germany's Euro 2012 squad, said that he had not thought twice when Dortmund – who recorded a second successive title win last season and also triumphed in the German Cup –offered him the extension.
"I didn't hesitate when the club proposed extending the contract, after all the success we have enjoyed and the huge amount of pleasure I have got out of it," he said.
Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp was delighted that Hummels had followed the example of Brazilian central defender Felipe Santana by signing an extension.
"Mats could easily have left for other European clubs but instead he opted for Borussia, which I am delighted about," said Klopp, who praised his player's defensive and leadership qualities.
Hummels has been at Dortmund since 2008 after signing from Bayern Munich, where he had come through the youth system.
