Morelia, Monterrey, Toronto into quarters
Mexican teams Morelia and Monterrey and Canada's Toronto all qualified for the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday.
Morelia came from behind to beat Costa Rica's Alajuelense 2-1 in Group A, Toronto overcame Dallas 3-0 in Group C to eliminate their MLS rival and, in Group D, Monterrey won 2-1 at the already qualified Seattle Sounders.
Mexico's Santos Laguna is the other team already through, with the remaining three quarterfinal places to be decided in matches on Wednesday and Thursday.
Visiting Alajuelense took the lead against Morelia in the 37th minute with Argentine Pablo Gabas scoring with a left-foot shot from 35 metres.
Substitute Joao Rojas equalized for Morelia in the 56th, before Miguel Sabah's near-post header gave the Mexican team the lead three minutes later.
Morelia tops Group A on 12 points from Alajuelense, which is also on 12 points. Los Angeles Galaxy is on nine and Honduran team Motagua is on zero points. Los Angeles Galaxy visits Motagua on Thursday, needing a win to overtake Alajuelense and claim a berth in the quarters.
Dutchman Danny Koevermans opened the scoring for Toronto against Dallas in the 29th, with Joao Plata adding two second half goals. Toronto has 10 points in Group C, Pumas UNAM has eight, Dallas seven and Panamanian team Tauro five. Pumas host Tauro on Wednesday in the final game in the group.
In Group D, Abraham Carreno scored the first for reigning champion Monterrey in the 3rd minute. Fredy Montero equalized for Seattle just before halftime, but Argentine Cesar Delagado got the winner for Monterrey in the 60th.
Monterrey has won the group with 12 points, with the Sounders second on 10 points. The other teams in Group D, Guatemala's Comunicaciones and Costa Rica's Herediano, are out of contention, but play on Wednesday.
